The man made wetlands of the Dandenong and Hallam Valley Catchments are important areas for the processing of storm water before it reaches Port Phillip Bay. The wetlands catch heavy sediments and help remove vast amounts of nitrogen before the water enters the bay. In constructing the wetlands, artificial swamps with large pools of water provide habitat for a large number of bird species. Surveys have been conducted on these wetlands since June 2007 with a total of 159 species being recorded. Access to the wetlands is available to the public.
